Who should NOT Read my Book

That’s right. I wrote a book and I don’t think it’s a good read for everyone. This is my list of people who should NOT read this book. (If you are on this list and you do read the book, I am so curious to hear what you think though!)

  • People who have medical trauma
  • People who don’t have the capacity to go deep at this point in time. This book is intense and I want you to look after yourself.
  • People who are strongly against Western Medicine or Science.
This book is intense. If you choose not to read the book, I celebrate the needs you are honoring by NOT reading it!

I thought I had inner peace and then I got sick...

At the start of my illness, I began writing journal entries. I wrote to process my feelings and make sense of what was happening. I continued to write as I was hospitalized, diagnosed, treated and moved into recovery. I am now ready to share my learning. This is the story of how I lost it, at a time when we collectively lost it, and how I navigated the beginning stages of recovery with greater ease by applying skills related to self-awareness and nonviolence. I hope my story invites you into compassionate processes so that we can all experience more healing.

It was a unique time to get diagnosed and treated for a rare disease, in the middle of a pandemic when so many others around the world were feeling such intense feelings of fear, frustration, and burn out. I had to cultivate hope and think differently about human suffering. My survival depended on it. Now that my personal crisis has passed, I can see that our human survival also depends on it.

Perhaps you are in the midst of a moment that is challenging you to the very core? Or perhaps the moment of challenge has passed but you still feel bitterness and pain related to your experience?

Finding Ahimsa is my journey into greater self awareness, self compassion, and eventually (with a lot of struggle!) more compassion and care for others.

I can’t guarantee that you will feel love towards those that have contributed to your pain but I hope to inspire you to free yourself in all the ways you can. Your health depends on it.

Our ability to empathize with others is directly related to our capacity for self compassion.

Adversity introduces us to ourselves - A pandemic page turner.

Adversity introduces us to ourselves - A pandemic page turner. I laughed, I cried, I shook my fists in rage and I learned. I was awed by the writer's strength, courage and generosity in facing a terrifying and infuriating situation and meeting it with the tools of her practice in non violent communication and an open mind and heart. There is a lot to be learned from her experience and it really is hard to put this book down - it really moves - and you will want to know what happens next. The writer really does let us in to the inside of a vulnerable and confusing time in her life. She emerges with grace, but I seriously don't know how she managed to do all of that and also have the strength and energy to share the important questions and lessons with us. It's the book about navigating all of the confusion, fear and divisive ideas that swirled around us during the recent pandemic that I wish I had read before the pandemic! Thanks to works like this, maybe we can all be inspired do better for ourselves and others going forward.

The cover of "Finding Ahimsa" portraying a soft pink heart with flowers blooming above announces to the reader that this is a gentle book.

It is a heart-wrenching story beautifully told by Erin, a young mother facing a barrage of symptoms during Covid. Gradually, she learns to navigate the often confusing medical field by employing non-violent communication skills. As a reader, I was fascinated by her ability to "observe without evaluating." and wanted to know more. I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking a better way to relate to others, especially when under duress. Those facing illness can certainly find strength in Erin's honest and straightforward story.

A True Story of Strength and Self Compassion

We each have our own story of living through the COVID pandemic. In this beautiful, page-turner of a memoir, Erin shares her experience of being diagnosed with a rare lung disease amid our world shutting down. Through her openness and vulnerability readers get to peek into Erin’s life while she navigated a strained health care system and adjusted to a different kind of life. Erin’s strength, her training in nonviolent communication and support from her family and closest friends led her down a path of healing and gaining a deeper sense of life and death. This book left me reflecting on what community is in the face of adversity, crying at the thought of Mother’s being separated from their children due to health struggles and the value of developing self-compassion. Thank you, Erin, for taking the time and energy to share your story with the world.

compassion and care for others begins with self-care and self compassion.

A compellingly honest and powerful story

Erin combined the most influential components of Non Violent Communication and explored the impact of community, compassion, privilege and love on the human experience, including the things which bind and those that disconnect. Erin’s story provides a raw look into her health crisis, while in the midst of a global health crisis and delves into the complexities of pain, grief, resilience and mortality. Throughout my reading of Finding Ahimsa, I cried many tears-some of sorrow, some of frustration, some of solidarity, and some of sheer joy. Her message is powerful and yet it is shared with such gentleness. This is a memoir that captures the essence one of the most traumatic, unprecedented times in modern history and leaves listeners with a message of hope and encouragement.
